Suffering from Whiplash?

Statistics reveal that well over 5 million people are involved in a motor vehicle accident every year in the United States alone, and of these, nearly 3 million of them will sustain an injury ranging from mild to severe. Whiplash syndrome is an extremely common injury following an auto accident, and in fact may be grossly underreported since people don't always seek help or recognize that their symptoms may be related to their accident. At Malavolti Chiropractic, our Peoria chiropractor wants you to know that while it can be frustrating and sometimes debilitating, whiplash does respond very well to chiropractic management.

The Mechanism of Whiplash: How It Happens And What It Feels Like

Whiplash is also known as an acceleration-deceleration injury. This is due to the way that a car suddenly and forcefully turns, jolts, slows down, or stops completely during an auto accident. When this happens, a driver or passenger will experience this force within their body. A seat belt will keep their body in place and very likely save their life, however their head will keep moving until the kinetic energy from being in a traveling car dissipates. This causes the neck to quickly and sometimes violently bend forward and back, sort of like a whip snapping. When this happens, any of the muscles, ligaments, joints, nerves, or other tissues within the neck can become strained and injured, leading to whiplash.

The hallmark symptoms of whiplash include neck pain, neck stiffness, headache or migraine, and shoulder pain or stiffness. A person may also experience jaw pain, tingling in the arms, hands, and fingers as well as trouble sleeping. Even the most minor car accidents can lead to symptoms of whiplash, which may not appear for days, weeks, or even months later because of the way certain pain-masking hormone levels fluctuate after a traumatic event. This means that undetected injury and tissue damage can become much worse by the time a person finally notices their symptoms and seeks professional help. For these reasons, it is extremely critical that if you've been in a car accident--no matter the size, and no matter if you have active symptoms or not--to consult with a chiropractor as soon as you are able.

Chiropractic Care In The Treatment Of Whiplash From Our Peoria Chiropractor

Peoria chiropractor Dr. Malavolti firmly believes that the human body can heal itself. As a practitioner of chiropractic, his role is to help guide the body back to health by providing non-invasive and drug-free methods that support, complement, and enhance your body's natural healing abilities. For whiplash, your customized treatment plan may include:

  • Chiropractic adjustment: one of the most effective ways to realign your spine, reduce neck stiffness and pain, and relieve pain by reducing pressure on spinal nerves and improving energy flow and nervous system function
  • Electro Stimulation and Therapeutic Ultrasound Modalities: important for tissue healing, as it stimulates better blood flow and lymphatic drainage, thus promoting anti-inflammation, reduced muscle spasms, and overall relaxation
  • Corrective exercises: once your spine is optimal alignment and healing has been initiated, we prescribe exercises to increase the strength and endurance of key postural muscles
